Steroid Withdrawal and Pain

Question: Will the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs help with the aches and pains due to the withdrawal symptoms that follow successful surgery?

Answer: Patients who have been exposed to high doses of steroids either through Cushing’s or by receiving glucocorticoid therapy typically experience these symptoms. They can be severe and although they typically reflect cure of Cushing’s in the case of successful surgery, can cause significant pain and discomfort. Sometimes it is associated with too rapid a steroid taper after surgery, but often needs to run it’s course to get the cortisol levels down. Anti-inflammatory drugs can certainly help clinically but, as all medications, should be discussed with the treating physician.
