Replacement for Surgery Years After Discontinuation

Question: I had one adrenal gland removed about 15 years ago and have not needed replacement medication for 14 years. I am scheduled for hip replacement surgery. Will I need any replacement medication during or after surgery?

Answer: It is very unlikely that you will need corticosteroid replacement before, during, or after your surgery. One normal adrenal gland provides plenty of cortisol during stress, however your surgeon should be made aware that you have only one adrenal gland.
